Is it chipped or do I have a cracked tooth?

Frequently asked is the difference between a cracked tooth and a chipped tooth. When a crack occurs, the tooth remains intact, and it can extend from the gum line to the chewing surface, potentially reaching the root and pulp, which may cause intense discomfort. This fracture line can be seen by the naked eye, on an x-ray or under a microscope. On the other hand, a chipped tooth is when a section of the tooth breaks off, either partially or entirely, which can happen due to various causes.

The various risk factors

The likelihood of tooth cracks, chipping, or fractures is influenced by a variety of factors. Some of the primary causes are engaging in contact sports without wearing protective gear, regularly biting on hard surfaces and food, teeth grinding, having a previously injured or cracked tooth, cavities and other oral health issues that weaken the tooth enamel, consuming acidic foods and drinks like soda and fruit juice, as well as suffering from acid reflux, and poor oral hygiene that exposes the teeth to bacterial degradation and infections. Additionally, the enamel and teeth tend to weaken as a person ages. Read more.
