Dental Implants if you are pregnant. Have you ever think about this. When you become pregnant, everything else takes a backseat as you are focused on the new life inside you. Everything you do, right from what you eat and drink to how you exercise and spend your day is carefully planned. You start wondering if you can get dental work while pregnant.

Let’s see what the different components of this treatment are and how they can or cannot affect pregnancy

● Dental implants themselves are made of bio-compatible matter which will have a lower part consisting of a titanium screw, middle part acts like a connector while the upper part is usually a crown, denture or bridge. In itself, a dental implant is quite safe as the materials themselves don’t pose health risks to anyone.

● Pre-treatment part consists of X-rays and sometimes CT. These are necessary to evaluate the health and status of oral cavity, bone density, teeth and jawbone strength, etc. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists don’t think that dental X-rays are particularly risky especially after the first trimester. But the recommendation for dental implants is to avoid it during pregnancy. Also, to avoid even a small risk of exposing the foetus to radiation, dental implants should be avoided during pregnancy.

An -small amount of local anaesthesia is safe during pregnancy which is why other dental works to improve and maintain oral health are considered safe. But dental implant procedure may require a stronger dose or rarely general anaesthesia which is considered risky for a pregnant person and the unborn baby.

Stress- it is a well-known fact that stress and anxiety are best avoided for a healthy pregnancy and to avoid complications like gestational hypertension. If a surgical or any dental procedure makes you anxious and it is an elective procedure, then it is best to postpone it for when you are not pregnant.

Antibiotics- medications that can impact the foetus are avoided during pregnancy. So antibiotics need to be prescribed with due precaution. With Dental implants, antibiotics are prescribed to avoid infection.

Complications- rarely, there may be infection or severe pain after dental implants. In the normal course, stronger antibiotics and painkillers can be given. But none of these can be given to a pregnant person and this can cause significant distress to the mother and the unborn baby. Read more
