Periodontitis, commonly known as Pyorrhea, is a prevalent dental disease that affects the gums and bone in humans. The disease is caused by an infection of the periodontium, which is the organ that surrounds and supports the teeth and consists of gingiva, bone, and ligament. If left untreated, Pyorrhea can lead to the involvement of the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth and result in tooth loss as the periodontium deteriorates. Gingivitis usually precedes Pyorrhea, and early attention and treatment of gum conditions are essential to prevent worsening of the disease. While Pyorrhea in its initial stages may not exhibit symptoms, individuals with poor dental hygiene and bad oral habits are at a higher risk and should be cautious.
